Historic Tarot Decks
The Renaissance Tarot
By Brian Williams

This is a beautiful and intriguing Tarot deck! The pictures do not do it service.

The Renaissance Tarot has some features that do not derive from extant decks dating from the Renaissance, but are in harmony with interests of the period.

All twelve of the deities of Olympus, and other classical gods and demi-gods, have been associated with the major arcana cards.

In the description of each tarot card, the Greek name is given, with the Roman name in parentheses.

Four classical myth cycles form the basis of the numbered cards of the four suits. An interlocking 4 part system of planets, constellations, seasons, etc., based on the elements, has been imposed on the court cards of the Renaissance Tarot.
The Renaissance Tarot Deck

All twelve gods of Olympus plus other Greek and Roman deities are depicted in the Major Arcana of the Renaissance Tarot Deck.

The Minor Arcana are set with classic myths and each suit is represented by a great city of renaissance Italy.  The Cups are the story of Eros and Psyche, & the city is Venice.  The Swords are the story of Achilles & the city is Milan.  The Staves relate the tales of Heracles & the city is Florence.  The Coins tell the myth of Demeter and Persephone, & the city represented is Rome.

There are two small changes in the titling of the Major Arcana: the Wheel of Fortune becomes Chance and Judgment becomes the Angel.

Any Tarot reader who is also a fan of the Italian Renaissance, will find the Renaissance Tarot a wonderful addition to their collection!

The Renaissance Tarot deck has 78 cards and comes with comes with an instruction booklet. The cards measure approximately 2 3/4" x 5".   Card titles are in English/Italian.
