Smudging with Sweetgrass - Smudging is the burning of sacred herbs in tribal smudging ceremonies for clearing, prayer, & purification.
Not just used by Native Americans, smudge has been used for thousands of years all over the world, though they may call it by another name (incense, for example).

Using Sweetgrass Braids

What is Sweetgrass? Like most smudge, Sweetgrass has been used all over the world.  In Northern Europe, it is known as Mary's Grass, and was strewn on church steps for Saints' Days. Some other folk names include: Seneca Grass, Holy Grass, Vanilla Grass and Buffalo Grass. 

In North America, Sweetgrass is mainly used in smudging and basket weaving.  Although it can be smoked and has been used as a cold remedy, Sweetgrass contains Coumarin, which can cause damage the liver over time.

Integrate your mind with your spirit, smudging with sweetgrass braids.  Burned with sage, Sweetgrass is burned to bring in positive influences and spirit helpers.  For people who are starting new things or want to release old patterns, sweetgrass is especially useful.

In magic, Sweetgrass is burned to call in beneficial spirits before performing spells. It has also been used for purification of magical tools.

A Sweetgrass braid may also be hung in the home as a protection amulet.  It is even said that burning Sweetgrass is protection from lightning and thunder. It has also been burned to keep bugs away.

As if those were not enough reasons to use this wonderful herb, it smells good too!  Sweetgrass has a wonderful soft sweet scent, not unlike vanilla & fresh mown hay... You could even make a nice sachet with this herb to scent your dresser drawer!

Our Sweetgrass braids can be burned in an open burner or over charcoal. Either light the end of the braid and smolder, or cut off a small piece to burn in a smudge bowl.  Remember, a little goes a LONG way!

Sweetgrass Braid Details:
Our current supply of sweetgrass braids are about 18-24" long. Each braid comes coiled, in a re-sealable bag, with metaphysical information about the herb on the back.

  Sweetgrass may be burned alone in an open burner, or over charcoal.  We recommend using a heat proof burner, like an abalone shell (with a bed of sand or salt, if using charcoal).  Remember, a little goes a LONG way!

Braids are tied at one or both ends. Some braids will be tied with cotton string, some with a synthetic, depending on the supplier. If your sweetgrass braid comes tied with a synthetic string, remove the string before burning. Our Sweetgrass comes in a re-sealable bag with metaphysical information on the back of the label.

Sweetgrass braids make fine metaphysical gifts! They can help change the energy of your space, but also smell great. Smudge is really easy to use, too!

Always use with heat-proof container to burn your sweetgrass. Never leave burning incense unattended. Keep away from children, pets, and flammable materials.
