Your personal book of shadows, is a witch's personal diary/notebook of rituals, magical lore, spells, and personal insights into your magickal life.
According to the alt.religion.wicca faq, it is also sometimes called The Mirror Book, although some wiccan's consider this an entirely different book only containing personal journaling. It may also be known as a magical grimoire or pagan diary. These are all personal choices and may differ, from path to path.

One of the goals of Wicca, as in most positive spiritual paths, is self-knowledge. A book of shadows, can be a valuable tool for this.

The book of shadows is a book of everything that you find important for your, or your coven's rituals. This book is generally for your viewing eyes only, because it will contain your spells, and private personal/coven information.

I do know of Pagans that are not Wiccans who also have a book of shadows, used in much the same way. A personal magickal spellbook or diary is most useful in most Pagan Magickal paths, if only for keeping your magickal life a little more organized. These blank Book Of Shadows can do just that!

It is not absolutely necessary for you to buy a book of shadows that is especially made just for that purpose. Many people are limited in funds and find a 3 ring binder or large journal will work just as well.  You can even take a store bought book and add your own decorations to it, to make it especially precious and personal to you. Some people will add leaves and flowers, others want glitter and paint. It is entirely up to you what you want your personal book of shadows to look like.
