Notes About Pure Essential Oils
You may see some of the following notes on our pure essential oils pages:

Do not use/avoid if pregnant, high blood pressure, epilepsy.
We do not have specific information as to what effects this oil will have on a pregnant woman or any of the other health warnings. The warning is only a tip we have seen on other wellness sites and we feel it is worth noting.
If you wish to know more about the warning, we suggest you contact your herbal practitioner, look for further information on the web, or in books on pure essential oils.

Photosensitive
Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, as this oil is known to be photosensitive. People using the oil MAY break out in a rash if they spend time in the sun after using this oil on their body. I have experienced this first hand, but only on rare occasions. This leads me to believe that it is not ALWAYS a problem. You will have to judge for yourself. The rash can be similar to sunburn or razor burn, where the pores may become irritated and itch or burn. That is only my experience. Your mileage may vary.
If you wish to know more about the warning, we suggest you contact your herbal practitioner, look for further information on the web, or in books on pure essential oils.

Use care with sensitive skin and mucus membranes.
This oil MAY irritate sensitive skin and tender parts of your annatomy. Be very careful, adding very small quantities of these oils to bath salts or bath water. A good place to test a DILUTED oil of this type, is on the inner wrist. If it is irritating there, best not to add it to the bath, at all.
If you wish to know more about the warning, we suggest you contact your herbal practitioner, look for further information on the web, or in books on pure essential oils.

Always dilute, unless instructed otherwise.
This oil is very potent and is almost never used undiluted. Do not use full strength unless you have specific instructions to use undiluted.
If you wish to know more about the warning, we suggest you contact your herbal practitioner, look for further information on the web, or in books on pure essential oils.

Use sparingly. (Juniper Oil)
Juniper is suitable for short-term use only, as it can irritate the kidneys and urinary tract. Do not use juniper if you have a kidney infection or a history of kidney problems. Pregnant women should not use juniper, because it may stimulate contraction of the uterus.
If you wish to know more about the warning, we suggest you contact your herbal practitioner, look for further information on the web, or in books on pure essential oils.

Essential Oils & Your Pets

Be very VERY careful what essential oils you use around cats.
"Many terpenoids are rapidly absorbed orally and dermally by the cat's system and are metabolized in the liver. Due to their volatile nature, inhalation of essential oil components is also possible, and these enter the bloodstream via the lungs, also to be metabolized in the liver. The terpenoids and their metabolites are often conjugated with glucuronic acid (glucuronidation) and glycine depending on the type of terpenoid and animal species involved. The conjugated metabolites are usually more water-soluble and are easily excreted through the kidney and feces.

Cats are known to be deficient in their ability to eliminate compounds through hepatic glucuronidation (they lack enzyme glucuronyl tranferases). Glucuronidation is an important detoxification mechanism present in most animals except cats. Lack of this important detoxification mechanism in cats may result in slower elimination and thus build up of the toxic metabolites in the body causing toxicity problems.

Most people are aware of warnings that focus on the topical and oral administration of essential oils, but they are generally unaware that inhalation of essential oils can also be unsafe for your cat. Oils can affect a cat by absorption and inhalation just like for humans, and precautions should be used when repeatedly diffusing essential oils, since the development of liver damage can be a slow process without any visible symptoms." quoted from TheLavenderCat.com
This message is also valid for other pets, especially birds. If you use a diffuser, it is important for your birds have access to fresh air AND not to use the SAME oil in your diffuser every single day. Toxicity can build up as it can take days for the oil to be metabolized by your pet.
