Perhaps the most important character in the story is Gandalf, a wizard who inspires, defends, directs, and protects the free peoples he is trying to unite and support against the Dark Lord of Mordor. Gandalf is a Merlin archtype, that link of guide and teacher between the realm of mortals and the kingdom of the gods.

In creating the Lord Of The Rings Tarot, the authors have felt, at the ragged edges of their own reality, the occasional presence of this archtype: It is playful as well as full of great teaching.
