Magical Kava
Powdered Kava Kava Root - Kava root relates to the planet Saturn, and the element of Water. In magic, it is used for visions, protection, and good luck. Kava can be useful for making poppets, creating your own tinctures, charms or mojo bags, spellcraft supplies, or for making your own magick powders or ritual incense blends.
Kava Ceremony, Effects, And How To Make It
Kava root is still used by many islanders of the South Pacific, today, in the Kava Ceremony.
On some islands, the Kava Kava root was once chewed by females or young, of the tribe, and then allowed to ferment slightly with coconut milk and water. The resulting drink was passed around to all at the ceremony, in a coconut cup, and drunk down quickly. After everyone drank, stories were usually told. The ceremony was both religious and social.
These days, kava root is usually powdered and nobody chews it. Variations of the kava ceremony still takes place on many islands, particularly at the end of the work week. It is often a social storytelling party and each individual gets their own cup.
Effects:
The effects of kava are normally that of a pleasant sedative. Low to moderate use is calming and relaxing, while thoughts and memory remain clear. A person may experience happiness, mouth numbness, mild sleepiness, and/or a loss of apetite. To learn more about the effects, good and adverse, look for information on the web from sites that specialize in Kava. Here is one. This will open a new window close it, to return here.
Making Kava Kava: There are many ways to make kava kava. This is only one and I dont claim it is the right way. It is just ONE way.
Approximately 1 oz of powder to 1 pint of water is used, more or less, depending on the strength of the kava kava root and how much of an effect you wish.
The kava powder is usually placed in a filter bag, nylon stocking, or cheese cloth. It is then submerged in cool/warm water and masaged heavily through through the filter bag, to release the fine powder while retaining the fiber in the bag. The masaging is important to release the effects of the kava. The liquid is then squeezed out of the bag and the pulp discarded. After filtering, it is then served up in coconut cups.
On a side note: Do not use boiling water, as it will negate the effects of the kava. Some people like to let the kava (filter, water, and all) sit for an hour or two and then filter. Also, I know people who do not bother with the filtering at all and just drink the water, powder and all. They still claim to feel the effects of the kava kava.
