Black Copal Resin Incense ~ Charcoal Resins
Also known as Copal Negro, Night Copal, and Black Mayan Copal. Copal resin comes from a family of trees known as Bursera. These are small trees that are related to both frankincense and myrrh. This Copal can be found growing in North, South, and Central America and is considered sacred to many peoples of South and Central America, including the Mayans. Copal resin incense is burned year round in the churches of Mexico and has been used as an offering to the gods in Central America.

Black copal resin is also called night copal, because it is said to carry the secret energies of the night. Of all the copal incense, Black has the heaviest fragrance. It is strong and mysterious scent, considered peaceful and grounding.

It is said that black copal resin helps people to connect with their deepest purpose and soul, or inner spirit. However, black copal incense is best known in Mexico as an incense burned on the Day of the Dead (November 1-2). This is where deceased family members come home to visit, from beyond. An altar is often set up with flowers, food, pictures and possessions of the dead ancestors. In some places flower petals are strewn, like a road, towards the house to help guide the spirits home. Black Copal, or Copal Negro resin, relates to the signs of Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. It belongs to the element of Fire, and is ruled by the Sun.
