A Little Aromatherapy Lore
Aromatherapy has been in use for thousands of years. It is generally acknowledged that aromatherapy began in ancient Egypt, although some authors claim that the aboriginal people of Australia were using plant oils over 40,000 years ago for medicinal purposes.

What Is Aromatherapy?
(Or Aroma Therapy)

According to one dictionary, Aromatherapy is the use of selected fragrant substances in lotions and inhalants in an effort to affect mood and promote health.  The way this is done can be quite varied. Some will use oil diffusers or potpourri oil warmers. These allow the fragrance to warm and rise into the air, to be inhaled. Others will use incense, candles, sachets, bath salts, lotions, soaps, etc.  Some will even ingest pure essential oils.

For the purposes of our Aromatherapy section, we are talking about the use of pure essential oils and fragrance oils in diffusers and potpourri warmers. Other aromatherapy items like incense, scented candles, potpourri herbs, lotion, soaps, and bath salts may be found listed under Incense, Candles, Herbs, and Bath & Body, respectively.
