Free Jokes! The First Beer This is a true story, although I may have the facts a bit muddled. An archeology expedition was digging in the oldest known permanent human settlement in what is now Iraq. In the oldest layer of this oldest settlement they found, carved into stone, a recipe for making beer. (You've got to be pretty serious about remembering something if you're going to carve it into stone!) From this recipe it was theorized that ancient humans, the hunter gatherer, had gathered a quantity of grain and stored it in a clay jar. The jar was left outside and rain filled the jar. Natural fermentation transformed the water into beer. With food so difficult to obtain they did not want to waste anything, and so this first beer was consumed and its properties were discovered. Q: Once humans discovered beer, what did they need? A: More grain. It was their desire for a consistent supply of beer, and the resultant requirement of agriculture, that forced our ancient ancestors to stop wandering and create a permanent settlement. And so it was beer that inspired civilization as we know it. |
